#45: Accepting Shabbat when Lighting Candles (Part 1)
- The Shulchan Aruch (263:10) quotes a dispute as to whether women automatically accept Shabbat when lighting candles or not. The Shulchan Aruch seems to accept the opinion that they do not accept Shabbat at that time, while the Rema prefers the opinion that they do normally accept Shabbat at that time.
- Therefore, Ashkenazi women should accept Shabbat when lighting candles, unless there is some very important need for which they need to wait. In that case, they should stipulate that they will accept Shabbat later (Mishnah Berurah 263:44). Sephardic women need not accept Shabbat when lighting candles, though it is best for them to stipulate explicitly at least once a year that they do not automatically accept Shabbat at that time (Yalkut Yosef 263:50).
